MXO grew up Kwa-Dwesi, Port Elizabeth .Born on November 20, 1978. Singing began quite naturally for him as a young child growing up in the township. Participating in both school choir and the scout choir. It was the musical legends such as Letta Mbulu, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba as well as the social and political climate of the early 1980’s that influenced the youngster. He was part of two groups – Black Power Crew and Lil Homies – that were in demand throughout Port Elizabeth.

Financial difficulties and plans to pursue a career in music brought MXO to Johannesburg in 1999. After meeting up with numerous artists, he eventually linked up with DJ Blaze and his Unity Recordings and found success. In 2005 Milandru had come to Johannesburg and was working as a live sound engineer for Simphiwe Dana and linked up with MXO. That year one sunny Tuesday he heard the original beat to the track “Ordinary Life” and two days later a studio was booked and MXO laid the vocals in one session.
